On the LAX Metro station, it was the usual challenge of cost effectiveness. They would have had to tunnel the line into the LAX horseshoe and, at least according to their analysis, doing so brought only a marginal number of additional riders over the 2.5-mile-away station and APM ride. Hence they built it the way they did.

It's not perfect for sure but an improvement. The question remains, with LA so spread out, how many people will even ride the Metro to the airport? It's already one transfer from downtown without including the APM.

I cannot offer a definitive reply, only my feelings about the subject...

Some years ago, I lived in Westwood, near the Federal building on Wilshire. For a trip to Europe, I took the Flyaway bus from the Federal building to my LAX terminal, easy-peasy. Then I enjoyed all the public transportation in Europe so, just like William illumines, on my return, I had the bright idea to take public transportation.

Stupid idea. The ~10 mile ride - actually, rideS, because it required 3 bus transfers - took 2.5 hours. I was exhausted and enervated by the experience. Never again!

Except, if I still lived in LA and the ride required only the two transfers, I would not hesitate to try it one more time. Of course, I could be a glutton for punishment! :-)
